Here is a comparison with no engineering in it at all. Fossil Group builds both of these watches under licence, using the same movements, the same mineral crystal and the same case suppliers.
Neither Giorgio Armani nor Michael Kors has ever made a watch. What you are comparing is two royalty agreements and two design departments, which is a narrower question than it looks.
So the useful answer is about taste and price, and one of them is clearly better value.
The short answer
Same builder, two licences
Fossil Group lists both brands under licensed on its own brands page, alongside Diesel, DKNY and kate spade. The Michael Kors agreement runs through 2027; the Armani relationship dates to 1997.
That means movement supply, crystal choice and case construction are shared. Differences between these two watches are styling decisions, not engineering ones.
Fuller takes are in the Emporio Armani guide and the Michael Kors guide.

Head to head
Both chronographs run quartz behind mineral crystal at 5 to 10 ATM depending on reference. Both are stainless steel. Both carry a two-year warranty that covers the movement, hands and dial only.
Michael Kors runs larger and shinier: 45 mm on the Lexington against 41 mm on the Armani steel chronograph. Armani is the more restrained of the two by some distance.
Price consistently favours Kors. The Lexington and the Armani steel chronograph do the same job, and the Armani asks more.
| Emporio Armani Chronograph | Michael Kors Lexington | |
|---|---|---|
| Made by | Fossil Group (licensed) | Fossil Group (licensed) |
| Case | 41 mm steel | 45 mm steel |
| Crystal | Mineral | Mineral |
| Movement | Quartz chronograph | Quartz chronograph |
| Water resistance | 5 ATM / 50 m | 10 ATM / 100 m |
| Price | About $219 | About $275 |
Where each earns its keep
Armani earns it on dial design. Cleaner layouts, more restrained indices, better proportions on the dress models. If you want a fashion watch that does not announce itself, this is the one.
Kors earns it on presence and on water resistance. The Lexington’s 10 ATM rating is genuinely swimmable, which the 5 ATM Armani is not, and our water resistance checker spells out the difference.
Both lose the same argument against watch brands. At around $220 you are within reach of Swiss quartz with sapphire, or a Japanese automatic.
Which to buy
Kors if you want the bigger watch, the better water rating or the lower price at the top of the range.
Armani if restraint matters and you would rather the watch read as considered. Its design department is the better one, and that is a real thing to pay for.
Neither if the money is meant to buy watchmaking. From the same manufacturer, Skagen offers the same hardware at around $78, which makes both of these look expensive.
The three to consider
The directly comparable chronographs from each brand, plus the smaller Armani.

Frequently asked questions
Are Emporio Armani and Michael Kors made by the same company?
Yes. Fossil Group builds both under licence, using the same movement suppliers, the same mineral crystal and the same case construction.
Which is better quality?
Neither, meaningfully. The hardware is shared. Armani has the better-resolved dial designs and Michael Kors the better water resistance at the top of the range.
Which is better value?
Michael Kors, on price for comparable specification, and it reaches 10 ATM where Armani sits at 5. Skagen from the same manufacturer undercuts both heavily.
Can you swim with either?
With the Michael Kors Lexington, yes, at 10 ATM. The Armani steel chronograph is 5 ATM, which covers shallow swimming but not diving. Check the individual reference.
Which makes the better gift?
Both work, and recognition is comparable. Choose Armani for someone with restrained taste and Michael Kors for someone who likes a larger, brighter watch.
The verdict
The same factory, the same crystal and the same movement class, wearing two different royalty agreements.
Michael Kors is the better value and Emporio Armani the better design. There is no third answer, because there is no engineering difference to appeal to.
