Two fashion watches from the same manufacturer, aimed at opposite instincts. Fossil Group builds both under licence, so the movements and crystals are shared.
Diesel sells scale. Michael Kors sells polish. Neither is pretending to be watchmaking, which makes this a cleaner comparison than most.
There is also one genuinely surprising fact buried in the Diesel range.
The short answer
Same builder, opposite briefs
Fossil Group lists both under licensed brands on its own brands page. Same movement supply, same case-making playbook, same two-year warranty covering movement, hands and dial only.
The design briefs could not be further apart. Diesel commits to industrial scale; Kors commits to shine. Both do their brief properly, which is more than most fashion brands manage.
Fuller takes are in the Diesel guide and the Michael Kors guide.

Head to head
The Mega Chief is 51 mm across with a 26 mm band. The Lexington is 45 mm with a 22 mm bracelet. For reference a Rolex Submariner is 41 mm, so the Diesel is a full ten millimetres wider than most people have ever worn.
Water resistance favours Kors at the top: the Lexington is rated 10 ATM against varying figures across the Diesel range. Our water resistance checker turns those into plain answers, and the size comparison tool renders both cases at true scale.
Price is close enough to ignore. Both sit in the $190 to $275 band for their signature chronographs.
| Diesel Mega Chief | Michael Kors Lexington | |
|---|---|---|
| Made by | Fossil Group (licensed) | Fossil Group (licensed) |
| Case | 51 mm steel | 45 mm steel |
| Band width | 26 mm | 22 mm |
| Crystal | Mineral | Mineral |
| Water resistance | Varies by reference | 10 ATM / 100 m |
| Price | About $194 | About $275 |
The Diesel worth knowing about
The Framed model is the outlier in both ranges. It uses a solar-powered movement that never needs a battery change, a case made from bio-based castor oil rather than steel, and a band woven from recycled ocean plastic.
It also costs about $137, which is less than either signature chronograph. Nothing in the Michael Kors range offers any of this at any price.
The trade is weight and formality. A polymer case feels less substantial in the hand and a textile strap is casual by definition, but if the question is which watch here shows the most thought, it is not the one with the gold bracelet.
Which to buy
Michael Kors for most wrists. The Lexington is the more wearable size, it is rated for swimming, and it does the two-tone chronograph look better than anything Diesel makes.
Diesel if you actively want the scale and your wrist can carry it. A watch that is unapologetically itself is easier to live with than a timid compromise, and Diesel commits where others hedge.
The Framed if the styling appeals but the mass does not. It is the cleverest thing either brand sells and the cheapest watch in this comparison.
The three to consider
The signature chronograph from each brand, plus the Diesel that quietly outclasses both on technology.

Frequently asked questions
Are Diesel and Michael Kors made by the same company?
Yes, Fossil Group builds both under licence, using shared movement supply and the same case construction. The differences are styling rather than engineering.
How much bigger is a Diesel than a Michael Kors?
The Mega Chief is 51 mm against 45 mm for the Lexington, with a 26 mm band against 22 mm. That is a substantial difference on the wrist, not a marginal one.
Which is better for swimming?
Michael Kors. The Lexington chronograph is rated 10 ATM. Diesel ratings vary by reference, so check the individual model.
Which is better value?
The Diesel Framed at around $137, because it is the only watch across both brands with a solar movement and a bio-based case, and it costs the least.
Will a Diesel fit a small wrist?
Usually not. At 51 mm the Mega Chief will overhang a 7 inch wrist. The Framed line is lighter but the same diameter, so size is the constraint either way.
The verdict
Same factory, same crystal, opposite instincts. Michael Kors is the safer buy and Diesel is the more committed one.
And the best watch in this comparison is the cheapest one in it. The Diesel Framed has solar power and a bio-based case for under a hundred and forty dollars, which neither brand advertises.
