Guess vs Daniel Wellington: The Cheap One Wins

This is the most lopsided comparison in the fashion tier, and it goes the opposite way to what the prices suggest.

Daniel Wellington costs two to three times more than Guess. Guess is rated to 100 metres and Daniel Wellington to 30, and only one of the two is built by a company that has been making watches since 1854.

Here is the case for each, and why the cheap one keeps winning on paper.

The short answer

Who builds them

Guess licenses its watch business to Sequel AG, a division of Timex Group, which handles design and manufacturing from Switzerland. That is a real watch company with real case-sealing expertise behind it.

Daniel Wellington has no parent watchmaker at all. It was founded in Sweden in 2011 and manufactures through contract suppliers, which is ordinary for the price but means there is no group underwriting the engineering.

Full context on each is in the Guess guide and the Daniel Wellington guide.

Head to head

The water resistance gap is the headline and it is not marginal. Daniel Wellington states in its own owner’s guide that its watches should come off before showering, bathing or swimming.

The Guess gold-tone bracelet model is rated to 100 metres, which covers swimming comfortably. At a third of the price it does something the Daniel Wellington explicitly cannot.

Both use mineral crystal, so scratches remain the shared long-term enemy. Our water resistance checker spells out exactly what each rating permits.

Where Daniel Wellington earns its price

On looks, and it would be dishonest to pretend otherwise. The Classic and Petite lines are better proportioned than anything Guess makes, the dials are cleaner, and the cases are considerably thinner.

The interchangeable strap system is also genuinely good. Quick-release bars let you change leather for nylon in seconds, and one watch with three straps covers more situations than three cheap watches. Our strap width finder confirms sizing for replacements.

Guess, by contrast, is unapologetically decorative. Set crystals, gold tones, visible sparkle. That is a taste question rather than a quality one, and plenty of buyers want exactly it.

Which to buy

Guess, on any measure that can be checked. Better sealed, better parentage, a third of the price. The dismissal Guess usually gets is lazier than the brand deserves.

Daniel Wellington only if the minimal aesthetic is specifically what you want and the watch will stay dry. Bought as a dry-wear accessory with a couple of straps, it does its job well.

If the appeal is minimalism rather than that brand in particular, look at Skagen instead: similar restraint, better proportions, and roughly half of Daniel Wellington’s price.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Guess or Daniel Wellington?

Guess, on specification and value. It is made by a Timex Group division, its entry models are rated to 100 metres and it costs a third as much. Daniel Wellington wins only on the minimal aesthetic.

Can you swim with a Daniel Wellington?

No. Every model is 3 ATM, and the company’s own owner’s guide says to remove the watch before showering, bathing or swimming.

Who makes Guess watches?

Sequel AG, a division of Timex Group, based in Switzerland, with Sequel International handling the United States market. Guess itself is a clothing company that licenses the watch business.

Why is Daniel Wellington so much more expensive?

Brand positioning and marketing spend rather than components. Both use quartz movements and mineral crystal, and Guess is the better sealed of the two.

Which lasts longer?

Both will run for years on battery changes. The finishes are the wear point on each, and neither uses sapphire crystal, so both will pick up scratches over time.

The verdict

The cheap brand is better sealed, better parented and a third of the price. The expensive one looks better and cannot go near a shower.

Guess wins the comparison and Daniel Wellington wins the photograph. Decide which of those you are actually buying.
