Chronograph Hand Not at Zero? Check the Pusher Order First

A chronograph hand sitting a few seconds off zero looks like damage and is usually a sequence problem you can fix in ten seconds.

The reset pusher only works when the chronograph is stopped. Press it while the chronograph is running and nothing happens, which is exactly what people report as broken.

Here is the order, and what to do if the order does not fix it.

The short answer

The sequence, in order

The top pusher starts and stops. The bottom pusher resets. Reset only functions when the chronograph is stopped, and the most common complaint about a chronograph is someone pressing reset while it is still running.

So: press the top pusher until the central seconds hand stops. Then press the bottom pusher. Everything should snap back to zero at once, including the subdials.

If the sequence is right and it is still off

Then the heart cam has slipped. That is the heart-shaped piece the reset hammer strikes; whichever way the hand is pointing, the hammer pushes it round to the point of the heart, which is zero.

A hand a second or two off means the hand was fitted very slightly out of position, or the cam has shifted. It is corrected by lifting the hand and reseating it, which takes a watchmaker a few minutes and costs very little.

It does not get worse and it does not affect timekeeping. Plenty of people live with a chronograph hand a second off zero for years.

The crawl is not a fault either

If the hands walk back to zero over a second or two rather than snapping, you have a plain quartz chronograph, where a stepper motor drives each hand back.

That is how they work rather than a symptom. A mechanical chronograph, and a meca-quartz one, uses the heart cam and snaps instantly.

One thing not to do

Do not leave the chronograph running permanently. It draws energy from the same mainspring that runs the watch, so a mechanical chronograph left running loses power reserve and, on some movements, accuracy.

Frequently asked questions

Why will my chronograph not reset?

Because it is still running. The reset pusher only works from a stopped state. Press the top pusher to stop it first, then the bottom pusher to reset.

My chronograph hand stops a second off zero. Is that serious?

No. The hand was fitted slightly out of position or the reset cam has shifted. A watchmaker reseats it in minutes, and it affects nothing in the meantime.

Why do my chronograph hands crawl back instead of snapping?

You have a plain quartz chronograph, where a stepper motor walks each hand back. Mechanical and meca-quartz chronographs use a heart cam and snap instantly.

Can I leave the chronograph running all the time?

Better not on a mechanical watch. It draws from the same mainspring, so it costs power reserve and can cost accuracy.

My chronograph’s central seconds hand never moves. Is it broken?

Almost certainly not. On a chronograph the central seconds hand is the stopwatch and only runs when started. The small running seconds subdial shows the watch is alive.

Nearly every chronograph reset complaint is the pusher order, and the rest is a hand a second out of position that harms nothing.

Stop first, then reset. If it still sits off zero, it is a cheap adjustment rather than a repair, and it can wait.
